The call-to-action widget
The sidebar widget provides departments with a flexible way to highlight important information alongside interior page content through strategically placed calls to action (CTAs). Positioned beneath the sidebar navigation on desktop and at the bottom of the page on mobile, these widgets create a clear visual opportunity to guide users toward related resources, key deadlines, featured initiatives, or sitewide priorities. It’s a great tool to drive engagement and encourage action.
Why use sidebar CTAs?
- Highlight related resources connected to the page topic
- Promote timely announcements such as application deadlines or events
- Support sitewide initiatives like giving campaigns or strategic priorities
- Encourage next steps such as applying, registering, contacting, or learning more
- Strategically placed calls to action can improve navigation clarity and help users move efficiently through their journey.
Best practices for sidebar widgets
- Limit to one or two CTAs per page to avoid overwhelming users. For each CTA, keep the verbiage to one or two sentences maximum. This is not the feature to use when needing a paragraph of text.
- Use clear, concise language with strong verbs (e.g., Apply now, request information, explore programs).
- Align CTAs with the content of the page whenever possible to reinforce user intent.
- Use this space for high-value actions rather than general information.
- Follow design standards for tone, accessibility, and visual hierarchy.
